The NorthFringe

northfringefrontierregionh-142heshfey-touchedafter-tereks-folly

A wild frontier region north of the known kingdoms, beyond the Paveran desert hills. Remote, largely untamed, and sparsely populated by scattered settlements and wandering peoples. Rich in ancient Hesh ruins and pathways. The NorthFringe forest is magic-touched, particularly attractive to those with fey blood. The region has been under the shadow of Lezmara's undead predations for approximately 26 years (as of h-142). Population 2,500, of notably mixed stock: 25% human, 10% dwarf, 10% elf, and 55% other, with many half-races and mixed races. Northfringe uses a combination of currencies from around the world alongside barter, and speaks Common with a distinct Northfringe accent -- a quick mumble that foreigners find difficult to follow. Northfringe was originally the northernmost outpost of the Golden River Empire, founded by Blain Brewman. The outpost was immediately both unmanageable and exciting, drawing adventurers and miscreants from the world over. It was the last bastion of law in a land of wild, and the law it had was tenuous at best: people there are just as likely to be carrying weapons as writs of law from some far-off capital. Religions vary from major gods to pagan superstition, with no real formal support from the local government and no temples of note in the city proper. The lords of Northfringe impose few restrictions on anything, and corruption is barely more rampant than opportunity for those who know what to look for. Nearly anything can be bought, sold, stolen, or bargained for in the streets, and the few things that cannot be had in rooms behind closed doors in the basements beneath them.

Hidden DescriptionThe NorthFringe is the frontier that the Gallund River Empire and the known kingdoms have never properly colonised. Its magical nature (fey-touched forest, ancient Hesh paths, old cave systems) makes it simultaneously dangerous and resource-rich. The screaming comet of approximately h-116 was Lezmara's arrival β€” her 26-year reign of terror has prevented any permanent settlement until now.
EconomyThe town deals in both the mundane and the exotic. There is a thriving slave trade in indigenous people taken from the surrounding lands and sold to different parts of the world, including to Onyx, who is always looking for a new specimen for his collection. Northfringe notably lacks high-quality goods, from large shipping boats needed for the rivers down to small tools. As with most port towns there is a rush during parts of the year to move trade in and out before winter, when icebergs in the northern sea increase to a level only a captain with a deathwish would sail.
GovernanceA loose affiliation with the Golden River Empire -- though the GRE believes Northfringe to be part of the empire. Northfringe maintains a bureaucracy that loosely mirrors the GRE's guild structure, but the guilds are largely autonomous from the GRE.

About this record: art and source provenance, discrepancies

IMPORT 2026-08-10 from `Places/78 - _ Northfringe, Golden River Empire.md`. The doc also records the fate of founder Blain Brewman: after a few decades the shadow elite running Northfringe's trade and politics grew tired of hearing Blane and the notes from Trayalon, and he disappeared mysteriously one night leaving no trace. Local rumor ties his fate to a special reserve whiskey released by his namesake brewery roughly eight years after he vanished. (The doc spells the name both 'Blain' and 'Blane'.)
