Early in the campaign, the entire top floor of the manor at Rosenthorne Court is destroyed in an enormous magical detonation. Lord Markus Tatarmoff had secretly constructed a planar gate in the uppermost chamber of his own house — the 'significant breakthrough' behind the paranoid, secrecy-bound summons that brought the party to the estate. His attempt to activate it went awry, and the resulting blast tore the roof off the manor and left the upper storey a burning ruin. The party is in the courtyard, looking up at the wreckage against the night sky, as debris is still falling.
