Each player character receives an unsigned letter of fine quality summoning them to Lord Brooveron's country estate, Rosenthorne Court, outside the village of Zalnic. Brooveron is on the verge of a significant breakthrough in his personal research and fears others learning of it: secrecy is absolute, and the PCs may tell no one they were summoned. The invitation drips with an unhealthy mix of wild excitement, fanatical paranoia and cryptic secrecy — he is plainly eager to press on, and just as plainly in desperate need of help because of whatever has frightened him.
