Wizard War - The Ashen Vow

Grant's were-rats detect a residual trace of alchemical explosives at a river dock, and discover that his own guards' movements are being anticipated. Fey recognises the situation through Infinite Calculation, states plainly that she cannot come — her presence would tip the outcome worse — and sends Yolanda in her place.

Two uncomfortable things surface in Griva's quarters: the castle guard has never been properly vetted, and Fey's minister rings have spread further through the kingdom than either Lloyd or Griva knew. Grant wears one. So does Yolanda.

The dock coordinator believes Griva is already complicit in an existing smuggling arrangement involving Grant. This is news to Griva. For two hundred and seventy gold he gives up a name: Mara Voss, operating in connection with Celia Burns. Celia's surprise when Lloyd names the explosives is genuine — whatever her business with Voss was, this exceeded it. Yolanda, who has been standing in the room the whole time in disguise, knows exactly where to find her.

The trail leads to one of Lloyd's own neighbourhood temples, where Brother Halvin has been accepting generous donations and asking no questions about the space under renovation. Mara Voss reframes the whole thing as commerce, is caught lying by Mac, takes five hundred gold, hands over a route document, and leaves with a remark about temples being where money goes to become virtue. Griva memorises her perfume — expensive and upper-class, entirely wrong for her trade.

Beneath the city, a construction access tunnel runs along the structural access points used to build Lloyd's statue. Both Mac and Grant belatedly remember hearing that a faction in Starfall resented the monument, and neither had thought it serious.

The fight in the pump chamber is against religious fanatics — the Ashen Vow — not hired muscle. Brother Caldus performs a Divine Decree under his own flourish-name, 'Ashen Path'. Two charges arm and detonate. Lloyd and the zealot captain destroy each other in the same instant; Griva brings Lloyd back. Mac's assessment is unambiguous: the foundation is gone, the collapse is contained, and they have two rounds once Tank stops bracing the pillar.

A letter recovered from a body reads: 'The materials promised are given gladly, that your noble and god-given work may be carried through to its proper end… We look forward to the day when this religion is cleansed of false idols. Allies of your cause.' The lowercase 'god' is deliberate — the funders do not share the Vow's theology, only its usefulness.

The statue falls. Nobody else is hurt. Lloyd, privately, is glad, and proposes replacing it with something that does not need any single face at its centre. Fey agrees without hesitation.
