Physical DescriptionA gaunt, hollowed-out man who reads two decades past his mid-fifties. Close-cropped grey hair worn short and untidy over a high, deeply furrowed forehead; a grey moustache and a short, patchy, unevenly grown beard along a sharp jaw. Heavy vertical creases stand between his brows, and the skin beneath his eyes is sunken into dark hollows, the eyes themselves pale and hooded and set deep. Prominent cheekbones over drawn cheeks, large ears, a thin downturned mouth. His colouring is weathered and ruddy, with broken capillaries showing across the cheeks and nose. He wears a crossed-over inner robe of undyed grey-taupe cloth with a heavy stitched seam, under a dark brown outer robe of thick, plain, unornamented weave, and a long double strand of small beads β€” green, oxblood and brass β€” hanging down either side of his neck. He carries himself heavily, sombre and still, with none of a merchant prince's polish.

Record Notes

About this record: art and source provenance, discrepancies

APPEARANCE IS CANON, not inferred: the ch-09 raw source states outright that 'her father Charles Faerwald is in his mid 50's but looks far older.' The published art matches that line closely, so text and art agree for once β€” physicalDescription is read off the art within the age the source fixes. WHY HE LOOKS OLD (DM-facing, ch-11 Sections): 'Edith and Charles Faerwald - Brothers killed in the battles between Swiftwater and Gallund empire.' His sons died in that war; Edith is the last remaining child and his only daughter. The source sentence trails off mid-thought ('May have') and is unfinished β€” treat the bereavement as established and whatever followed as unwritten. DM ASSESSMENT of his usefulness, ch-09 raw source: 'He generally agrees with his daughter, and is past the point of generally insightful comments.' He defers to a fifteen-year-old and his counsel no longer lands. Kept out of publicDescription as a DM judgement rather than a player-facing fact, though a player meeting him would read most of it off his face and bearing. FAMILY STANDING: Faerwald holds the Merchant Guild among Trayalon's great guild-families (location/109-trayalon.json governance; 'Events & Groups/140 - Golden River Empire Guilds.md'). The family establishes the Golden Road trade route in h-184. Edith's Character Grid line reads 'Opportunistic and shrewd business woman and broker', and by h-141 she is looting Hesh prisons and competing with Samantha Fairbreeze for artifacts β€” the family's merchant character runs through her, not him. AGE DISCREPANCY on Edith, unresolved: the ch-09 source and Admond's journal both make her 15 (the journal hedges '15 or 16'), while the Character Grid gives her Born 96, which would make her 13 at h-109. Flagged, not reconciled. ART PROVENANCE: images/Charles Faerwald.jpg sits at the flat root and reads as third-party digital portrait art, live in the published bundle at /images/entities/character/charles-faerwald.webp. Same caveat as the other flat-root finds β€” verify rights before the site goes wide. Introduced alongside his daughter in ch-09 as the NorthFork advisor. Source detail is thin beyond the family connection and the NorthFork post.
