The Song of Fallen Stars tells how the elves came to PilotStar — refugees of a plane that had already collapsed, their own Terek's Folly. Having seen what the Hesh were building and what the Blazing Hood did, they moved to stop the creatures from beyond. The accord was struck between Terek, the Tretcords (far more elvish then than now), and the Odum Cinderforce family for the Blazing Hood. Elf, dwarf and Hesh knowledge together made a new plane to hold what could not be killed — and the prisons were created to preserve the power structure. Terek studied its manufacture closely: the lines of power, how they were moved and bound to the prime plane. Alek would later grow concerned at that fascination.
Edith Faerwald has looted another ancient prison and come away with a keystone gauntlet — a prisoner-guard gauntlet that activates the gates. She does not know what it is, only that Pavik Shim is hunting her for it, and she is struggling to find an underground buyer she can trust while masking that she is from the River Empires. She provides a device that detects artifacts.
Tel-vis returns to explain that the link to the Nexus can only be severed from the Nexus side, and that the Blade of Worlds can carry a traveler there to cut it.
