Detailed NarrativeGraak sends Freespirit to Trayalon to enlist the council. Meanwhile Solomon is squeezing upstarts; a rogue named Trace has taken A Place to Drink in Fairbreeze. In Fairbreeze the gang's symbol (Perception DC 20) proves derived from the maker's mark of Sorin — the gang is Bad Harvest — and Graak detects an outsider's recent presence. Trace's crew were hunting the Tower of Basai; Basai was a Hesh lord who mastered planar travel, and his sanctuary sits in the mountains above Serpent's Lake. Hesh coordinates in the archives plus Graak's locator compass point the way.
At the tower they find Trace, Brandon Swiftwater, and Krel completing the ritual. When the gate opens the party glimpses ley-line energy sucked into the nexus, many worlds, then a realm of darkness and fire; a swirling mass comes through and fuses with Krel, restoring his full power. Brandon escapes through the portal to the nexus, leaving a maximized delayed blast fireball behind.
Admon and Freespirit kill Krel, but the fireball kills Admon and Graak, both already weakened. Freespirit, just outside the blast, survives and carries the bodies home. Krel's warning stands: he is not the only one of his kind seeking a way back, and leaders of this world are already helping return the old wardens. Peter Gallund takes the reins of the state, grieving, and hardens into a hater of outsiders.
