Summary
Peter Gallund arrives at Fairbreeze with 200 soldiers to sign a treaty. During the ceremony he unexpectedly insists Vivian return to Trayalon as a political hostage. Before the treaty can be resolved, Yolich arrives and denounces the GRE; Eastguard is revealed to have been destroyed in a coordinated Darkmoon/Blackblade attack. In the ensuing chaos, Vivian is killed, Karl enrages and attacks Peter, and Commander Harrison refuses to withdraw, burning much of Fairbreeze. The Hench brothers evacuate survivors to their sawmill.
Detailed Narrative
Travel back through Shadebarrow reveals a city on edge β rumors of a Cards attack on Eastguard are circulating. Peter Gallund and a large escort arrive at Fairbreeze. Marshal Adair is present, tracking the Cards gang and suspecting insider support. Chester Blanks has authored a fair treaty that would leave Vivian in autonomous rule but require her to pursue anti-GRE interests. Gerald Brightspring is at Fairbreeze searching for the Greycaller tomes, believing they hold knowledge of how Hesh leaders preserved life essence through death. During the treaty signing in the Fairbreeze garden, Peter amends the agreement to require Vivian to accompany him to Trayalon β Karl explodes in fury. Before resolution, Yolich arrives and declares herself the true matriarch of Fairbreeze, calling on the village to oppose the GRE empire. News also arrives that Eastguard garrison has been destroyed β burned by forces including a 'sorcerer named Fairbreeze' working with Blackblade Orcs and Darkmoon. Harrison urges killing Yolich and all loyalists. Yolich blasts Peter and teleports away; Vivian is killed caught between them when Peter swings; Karl charges Peter but is intercepted by Harrison and Adair. The town descends into chaos β an armed crowd attacks the outnumbered GRE forces. Peter orders retreat, but Harrison refuses, and Fairbreeze burns. Stefon and Brace return, evacuating survivors (including wounded Karl) to their family sawmill β Ja'ayne recognizes this from her old vision. Gerald aids survivors, absorbing life essence of those he cannot save. The three Hench brothers and Karl vow to destroy Peter and the GRE. The forge plans and Shield plans are captured by GRE troops as the town is looted.
